4th Quarter Instruction/Grading Changes

April 28, 2020

Dear Parents/Students:

In light of the building closure for the remainder of this school year, online learning for grades 3-12 and work packets for PreK-2 have continued. Ms. Young, Mr. Hughes and the teaching staff have been tracking academic progress and work completion rates very closely. There is undeniable data that indicates we have many more students struggling with virtual instruction in grades 3-12, which has negatively impacted their progress and grades. We are being sensitive to the burdens and stress that many of our families are experiencing as a result of circumstances during the pandemic. Therefore, we are making some changes to grading, work requirements, and completion deadlines for the remaining weeks of the 2019-20 school year.

For grades K-8, the 4th quarter will now be graded as Pass (P) or No Pass (NP). Students will have to earn a 60% in order to pass a subject for the 4th quarter. All HS courses will still remain graded for the 4th quarter. However, there will be NO NEW WORK ASSIGNED AFTER MAY 1 for any students (PreK-12). All work assigned up to May 1 will still need to be turned in/submitted on time and will be graded.  Teachers will still offer ungraded assignments/activities each week from May 4th on; one per subject per week. Students will have the opportunity to submit any late work online by May 19th, and in paper form (if applicable) by May 18th. Paper assignments can be dropped off in the main entrance foyer on Mondays (May 4, 11, 18) from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm. Students in grades 7-12 are reminded that 4th quarter grades will impact their athletic eligibility. Students may have no more than 1 failing grade (NP for 7th/8th grade) or have less than a 1.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale during the 4th quarter in order to be eligible for athletics in the Fall of 2020.  The Athletic Handbook can be found in the One View Parent Portal and on the District website under “Athletics.” We’re urging students to PLEASE submit all assignments and late work so they can be graded. If any students have questions or need help, we ask that they please contact one of their teachers. Teachers are more than willing to help, but they need to know what issues students are experiencing.

Plans will be coming out soon for students to pick up their personal belongings that are still in desks/lockers in the building. We want to do that in a safe, orderly manner. We’ll send out a school message, along with posting information on the website, Facebook and Twitter. Thank you for your patience and diligence in helping students get through this challenging (and sometimes frustrating) transition to virtual instruction. Remember that on the other side of weakness is strength. We will get to the other side and when we’re all together again back in our school it will be that much more special! Stay resilient, Tigers!

Take good care,
